Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes. - Walt Whitman
On Friday I ran across a tweet by @NMamatas that contains a major spoiler for the new movie, but old Agatha Christie story, Murder on the Orient Express. His tweet contains a major spoiler, so I'll link to it and block out quote it.
[MAJOR SPOILER ABOUT MotOE] THIS IS THE MOST POPULAR NOVEL IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. NOBODY WILL BE GUESSING.
There are very few things on the internet that seem to get people worked up more than spoilers, and the argument about when they're appropriate to post. And, in my opinion, the reason it's such a contentious issue is because there are two selfish dichotomies at the heart of consuming media:
• People need to talk about media. Small talk and shared experiences are one of the most essential tools people have in building relationships. • Plot twists are one of most enjoyable parts of many media, and knowing it ahead of time ruins the piece, or at least warps it for the person being spoiled. As people we deal with these inherent conflicts in a system we've spent 10,000 years of evolution perfecting: We develop an unwritten personal code that we kind of try to align with what we think other's code is but we don't really know and get very angry at the other person when their personal code doesn't align. It's a system that breeds confusion and frustration. more after the jump

A truly great album is one that takes months to listen to. I start with one song that anchors the album while I drift from other song to other song, taking them in. The original favorites fade to the background and I start to appreciate other songs more. Eventually, that album works it's way into the scenery of life, and just a few notes from any song gets me, to borrow a line, "thinking of a place, And it feels so very real", similar to the way a familiar scent may whisk you to a time and place. The War on Drugs 2014 Lost in the Dream became one of those personally iconic albums for me. I now associate it with my 6 months in Finland, and it feels downright idyllic on a cloudy, somewhat cool day. It's only been just over 2 months since the release of A Deeper Understanding, but the album may be even better than their 2014 masterpiece. More after the jump |
